In a time characterised by economies of scale and mass produced clothing and accessories, it is not very common to find hand made pieces that one could associate with the nostalgic art of threading. Maria José Garcia is the heart and soul behind the Spanish brand ‘Absenta Accessories.’ I discovered the work of Maria José months ago and I fell in love not only with the delicate beauty of her crochet pieces but also with her stunning photography. One may easily see that her work is deeply inspired by the past and the union with nature. Her crochet threads are like spells meant to embellish those who want to dress for ceremony and ritual. Her work is evidently inspired by the old ways, by the archetypical priestess who fills her life with solemnity and reverence for what is wild and free.
I am honoured to share on this blog some of her most recent work entitled ‘Ritual.’ In this collection, Maria José seeks to evoke the physical and spiritual union with nature that has been long forgotten by human kind. The use of the dagger in the pictures is a reminder of the initiatory process of those looking for transformation. A transformation that occurs inside and that looks also to transform the outside world. With needle and thread Maria José preserves an old tradition and gives us subtle a messages. Her work whispers with the tongue of an old wisdom.
